My reply is that I am both!
A vocal coach approaches the song from the language and literature perspective – focussing on performance and character. A vocal coach is also traditionally a strong accompanist and therefore has an in depth knowledge and understanding of the musical content.
A singing teacher has a thorough knowledge of how the voice works and focuses on the individuals technique. A range of exercises is employed to solve any issues and improve the singers ability over a period of time.
I teach wearing both hats as I have a classical background and therefore have a strong understanding and respect for the songs content and meaning. I also have a fascination with how the voice works and how through different ways of using our instrument, we can enhance every performance. Therefore, whilst working on a song with a student, we identify the techniques required to convey that performance and develop them within the context of the song. These skills are then transferable to other songs learnt at later stages. I believe that singers have to understand how their instrument works to really get the maximum potential from it.
Anyone that wants to sing to the best of their ability; whether that is the frustrated Mum who wants her children to like her singing in the mornings through to the actress who wants a lead role on West End.
I see people who only want two or three sessions to conquer a vocal stumbling block or to work on a specific song through to students I have had for years who want to achieve degree and post graduate qualifications in voice.
